The Very

If you have rocking guitars and ’80s keyboards reverberating in your ears, one fab guy and two fashionable girls sparkling in your eyes, chances are you’re at a show of San Diego’s newest new new wave band, The Very. Consisting of Phil Inzunza (guitar/lead vocals), Lex Pratt (keyboard/vocals), and Diana Death (bass/vocals), the band takes their name from an oft-quoted line in the dark comedy Heathers: “you are so very….”
The Very’s music is inspired equally by brooding teen angst and nostalgic cool. Their sound is full of elements from the past and present with a wide range of influences, from the Pixies to the B-52′s. The Very’s lyrics, which are generated organically according to the mood of the music, are playful and purposely nonsensical, but deeply passionate, edgy, and clever enough to keep you interested and wanting more
Formed in 2009 by principal songwriters and romantic pairing Phil and Lex, the duo had a musical vision of catchy, retro-modern tunes that were to be both dark and fun. Sick of the modern offshoots of 90′s grunge, they focused on composing anti-power chord rock songs. Their vision became reality with the addition of rhythm section rebels Diana and Gigo Marquez on drums. The band released their debut album of anthemic, new-new wave tunes through local indie label Aural Gravy Records. Entitled The Discovery, it dropped on April 5, 2011.
Now a threesome (Gigo left the band in the winter), The Very are currently writing songs for their upcoming sophomore album.
